According to News 4 San Antonio, there was a San Antonio pedestrian accident that sent the person to the hospital. The car was out of control and jumped onto the sidewalk where the pedestrian was walking.

This is troubling because you don’t typically think about staying safe when walking along the sidewalk, yet at any second and out of control car could jump up and injure or kill you while you are walking. In order to make sure this doesn’t happen there are a few things that can help you out. Although there is nothing foolproof to keep you safe while being a pedestrian, there are a few tips that can help you whenever you aren’t cruising along in your car.

Let’s take a look at some ways you can avoid pedestrian accidents when you are minding your own business on the sidewalk.

Stay On Sidewalks and Walkways

I know the cited pedestrian accident was caused because a car jumped the curb onto the sidewalk, but there are much higher chances of getting hit by a car if you are walking off the sidewalk or away from a crosswalk. A great way to avoid pedestrian accidents is to always stay where you are supposed to be walking. There are plenty of people who walk across the street when they are not supposed to, just to save a little time. Keep in mind that there are fast cars that could potentially kill you if you do this.

Walk Against The Traffic

If you were riding a bike it would be a different story, but walking on the sidewalk doesn’t cause drivers to swerve or get scared. Walk against the traffic unless you have to walk on the street. This way you can see if a car is going out of control and if you need to avoid it.

Take Side Streets

If you live in a big city or in a rural town there are always going to be side streets that most people don’t drive on. Find safe side streets that minimize the amount of cars that are swerving by. It’s a simple numbers game: If less cars pass you by, there is a less chance of you getting hit by a car. Of course this isn’t going to completely prevent all of your problems, it should help out a little bit. Also avoid walking at night, since people can’t see you and people drink more.
