Watch Out for These Popular OSHA Violations

OSHA

Every year, OSHA (U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration) creates a report that lists the most frequently violated safety standards when the federal government does worksite inspections. Why does this matter to you? Every 7 seconds, someone is injured at their place of work. Taking a look at these common mistakes could help you avoid getting harmed.

Violation #1

The most frequent violation is the lack of fall protection. While you might think this only applies to construction workers, there are plenty of other jobs that could cause a slip and fall accident. If you work on ladders, even a small one to get files, you need to be careful. Make sure you are wearing the correct footwear. Also, be sure the check for anything that could cause a person to fall. If there are any platforms that need to be elevated for safety, it’s important to raise them as soon as possible. If you do have ladders, make sure none of them are damaged. Same goes for scaffolding.

Violation #2

Most businesses need to have proper hazard communication. Violating proper communication standards for hazards is a bigger problem than most people think. If your datasheets are not up to date or not accessible to employees, you could be fined. Every chemical that can be found in your workplace needs to be properly labeled.

Violation #3

Over 5 million workers in the U.S are required to wear some kind of respirator. These respirators can protect workers from harmful dust, sprays, vapors, and gases. Unprotected workers can develop serious health problems such as cancer, breathing problems, or sometimes even death. If you happen to work around chemicals or in some kind of workshop, make sure your employer is providing you with proper protection. This also goes for face and eye protection. Many workers in the U.S face environmental hazards at work. It is the employer’s responsibility to make sure you are protected from these dangers.
