A study at the Washington University of Medicine in St. Louis has released a study that links PPI’s with deadly diseases. PPI stands for proton pump inhibitors. This classification of drugs is usually used to treat heartburn. According to the study, long use of some PPI’s could lead to an early death. They have been able to link the drug to heart and kidney diseases, and stomach cancer. While many Americans take prescriptions for PPI’s, many of these drugs can be bought over the counter. Millions of Americans take these drugs without consulting a doctor and take them daily for an indefinite amount of time. Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly said, “Taking PPIs over many months or years is not safe, and now we have a clearer picture of the health conditions associated with long-term PPI use.”
It should be mentioned that this is not the first time PPI’s have been linked to health problems. Other researchers have linked it to bone fractures, pneumonia, and even dementia. When taking into consideration the number of PPI users, this means thousands of excess deaths every year. Many of these users are putting themselves at risk, without the actual need for the drug. “Overuse is not devoid of harm,” says Dr. Al-Aly. He goes on to say “PPIs sold over the counter should have a clearer warning about the potential for significant health risks, as well as a clearer warning about the need to limit the length of use, generally not to exceed 14 days.”
