Arthur Putt was a former mechanic for the Ford Motor Co. Mr. Putt was diagnosed with mesothelioma after extended, repeated exposure to asbestos. The asbestos was used in the packaging of breaks for Ford. Mr. Putt breathed in the asbestos while conducting brake inspections, sanding new brakes, blowing out asbestos-filled brakes drums and sweeping the floor covered in the dust left from the asbestos. The Los Angeles court that heard the case awarded the Putt family a total of $34 million. $8.5 million for damages, $4.5 million in compensatory damages and $25.5 million in punitive damages. Mr. Putt’s wife was also awarded $4 million in loss of consortium damages. The jury found Ford to be 100% responsible for the damages.
