A massive $45 million verdict with $7 million in interest was affirmed last Thursday. The case involved a drunk driver, Elba Janeth Jimenez, a drunk driver who crashed into a taco truck while running from the police. Claudia Fernadez, a 38-year-old single mother of four, and one other unnamed woman were killed as a result of the crash. The four children of Fernadez filed a suit against Jimenez and her long-time girlfriend, Maria Elena Rodriguez (who gave Jimenez the keys to her car) for their roles in the death of their mother. The suit accused Rodriguez of giving Jimenez her keys, despite knowing that Jimenez was intoxicated.
Three of the children were minors at the time their mother passed away. These children are now orphans, who will have to live the rest of their lives without their mother. The jury and courts recognized how horrible these circumstances are. They awarded the children a total of $45 Million with $7 million more in interest. This tragic event sent the lives of the children involved in a spiral. Their academic and social lives were harmed. The oldest sibling had to give up their life, in order to be the new parental presence in the children’s life. While no amount of money can make up for this tragedy, hopefully, it will solve at least any economic problems they will face from not having their mother.
