A Bronx group home for adults that have disabilities has been accused of abusing its residents. It was reported that staff members would hit, smack, kick, spit at, and give cold showers to residents. Some residents were even left with massive bruises and black eyes. According to another report, staff members would answer the phone “Good morning, Bronx Zoo.” The actions of these staff members have caused New York State to agree to pay $6 million to settle the lawsuit. The lawsuit was brought on behalf of three residents. The three women all had major disabilities and ranged from ages 39 to 52.
However, the state ended up spending almost the same amount in defending the accused staff workers. About $5.7 million was spent on retaining representation for the employees. Hopefully, this lawsuit will shine new light on abuse in the healthcare system. Disabled and elderly individuals are often abused in the retirement or group living facilities they call home.
