Tuesday night, the retired assistant chief of the Converse Police Department was killed after his vehicle was struck by a drunk driver. 58-year-old Rodney Rheiner was the passenger in a Lincoln SUV that was hit around 9 p.m. that night. The crash occurred in the 14300 blocks of Nacogdoches rd. Assistant Cheif Rheiner was transported to Brooke Army Medical Center, where he later died. Rhenier served the Converse Police Department for 27 years. He retired as assistant chief in March 2017.  According to police, 23-year-old Jeanna- Nicole Bernice Coutros was driving erratically in her Toyota Tacoma before the crash. She has been charged with intoxication manslaughter and evading arrest.

Before the crash, SAPD attempted to stop Coutros, but after the responding officer got out of his vehicle, she sped off. Shortly after, Coutros sped up on Nacogdoches and swerved to avoid hitting a vehicle. That’s when she drove into oncoming traffic and collided with Rhenier’s SUV. Coutros’ bail has been set at $135,000.
