Texas Leads in Fatal Trucking Crashes

commercial trucks

In 2019, Texas accounted for more than 13% of fatalities suffered in truck wrecks across the entire country. Even more shocking is that Texas has 52% more deaths than the state with the second-highest fatality rate from truck crashes-California. Between 2015 and 2016, overall fatalities from motor vehicles rose more than 5%. Coming close to surpassing the highest number of deaths back in 2003. Baack in 2013, trucking crashes resulting in fatalities that rose by 51% in a span of 4 years. So, what factors keep Texas as the state with the most trucking fatalities?

Causes

There are several factors that contribute to a large number of fatalities in Texas. One reason is our oil and gas industry. With an increase in demand back in 2008, companies needed more drivers. This combined with other industries increasing demand for commercial drivers has led to a shortage in CDL drivers. Experienced drivers are leaving the industry to retire or work elsewhere. Not enough new drivers are joining the industry, so more experienced drivers are being pushed to their limits. This stress is causing accidents.

According to studies done by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, as many as 30% of Texas’ commercial vehicles should not be on the road. These vehicles do not meet federal safety standards due to bald tires, defective breaks, or inoperable lights. Poor maintained commercial vehicles combined with Texas’s growing population create a dangerous situation. With more drivers and unsafe vehicles on the road, the more likely someone is to be involved in a wreck.
