Listeria is a serious illness that affects over 1,600 each year. About 260 of those people end up dying from their condition. According to the CDC, people 65 and older, pregnant women, and newborns are the most likely to be at risk. This is especially concerning due to a recent recall that calls for the removal of 25,000 pounds of sausage and 13,000 pounds of ground beef. Companies like Whole Foods has recalled over 70 of their products over this contamination.
Salad bar, hot bar, and even frozen packaged meals have been subject to this recall. A full list of the recalled items from Whole Foods is here. The items in question were shipped between October 10, 2019, and November 4, 2019. The potentially affected states included North Carolins, Florida, New York, Tennesse, Connecticut, Texas, New Mexico, New Jersey, Colorado, Idaho, and Kansas. So far, there has been no confirmed illness linked to these products, but the major grocery chain still concerned that these products could have affected pregnant women and the elderly. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headaches, and diarrhea.
If you are unsure if your product is part of the recall, throw it out or return it to your local Whole Foods. If you still have the product, you can get a full refund from Whole Foods if you have the receipt from the purchase. Other products affected by the recall, that are sold at other stores can be found here.
