Major Deficiencies in Medical Care.
The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently found serious issues at Houston based MD Anderson during there two investigations this past spring. The CMS said in a letter to MD Anderson “These deficiencies have been determined to be of such a serious nature as to substantially limit your hospital’s capacity to render adequate care.” For those who are seeking treatment at MD Anderson have a reason to be concerned. The investigation started when the agency first heard about a blood transfusion that went wrong back in December of 2018.
According to the investigation report, the CMS found deficiencies in 5 different areas. According to the Houston Chronicle, these areas are quality assurance, nursing care, patient rights, institutional oversight, and laboratory services. The hospital responded in a statement to a publication claiming that they have policies to protect their patients, and that blood transfers involve a certain amount of risk. MD Anderson Stats in an email that in rare instances, severe reactions occur with blood transfusions. According to officials, this incident was not the product of mislabeling. MD Anderson said it is reviewing its policies in the wake of this incident. The Hospital is also creating a correction plan to address these issues. Soon the plan will be submitted to the CMS for review.
