Distracted driving has become a massive issue across the country. This distracted driving usually comes in the form of texting and driving. Because of this common issue, texting and driving have become more taboo and some local governments have even made it illegal. However, this has lead to some misinformation as to what exactly constitutes as “distracted driving.”
To put it simply, distracted driving is anything that takes your mind off of driving. You don’t need to take your eyes off the road to be distracted. Traditional texting not only took your eyes off the road, but it also takes your hands off the wheel, and you take your focus away from driving. Most people think that Voice texting is an obvious solution to this problem. Being able to speak instead of type would make texting safer while driving, right? Unfortunately, the research doesn’t support this.
The Texas A&M Transportation Institute conducted a study to see if voice texting is actually safer. As it turns out, it’s not any better than manual texting. Drivers in the study had significantly delayed response times, they weren’t consistently looking at the road, and voice to text actually takes more of the drivers time than manually texting. What makes this more dangerous is that drivers think they are being safer. When drivers are lulled into a false sense of security, it’s dangerous for everyone on the road. This could lead to an increased likelihood of accidents. If you’re behind the wheel, its best just to ignore your texts till your safely at your destination.
