Earlier this month, Douglas and Diane Everson were awarded $4.25 million. The couple sued a number of companies after they were diagnosed with mesothelioma. They both contracted lung cancer from occupational exposure to asbestos. Mr. Everson worked for Lockheed Shipyard as a marine electrician in the 1970’s. He sued the shipyard and several other companies that supplied the company with asbestos products. While some of the companies denied supplying any asbestos products, the evidence proved otherwise. The jury found that the asbestos products were unreasonably dangerous, and awarded the couple a total of $4.25 million. Mr. Everson learned of the jury’s verdict while he was receiving end of life care in his home. While his life was coming to an end, he said he gained solace knowing the company was held accountable for their actions.
This verdict is an important decision for anyone in Washington state. The state’s economy used to be dominated by asbestos-related industries, leading to its status of having the highest rates of mesothelioma. While this deadly disease has devastated thousands, some victims can find satisfaction knowing these careless companies are being held responsible.
