Can Traumatic Brain Injuries Get Worse Over Time?

traumatic brain injuries

Thousands of Texans suffer from traumatic brain injuries every year. Some of these injuries can be life-threatening and require immediate and ongoing medical attention. If you or a loved one has suffered from a brain injury, at the hands of someone else’s negligence, you might be wondering what is TBI? The CDC defines a traumatic brain injury (TBI) as a disruption in normal brain function resulting from a blow or penetrating injury to the head. Of course, not every head injury results in a TBI, but it’s important to remember anyone is susceptible to them. Especially the elderly and children.

Some of the most common causes of brain-related trauma are unintentional falls, assault, blows by other mechanisms, and motor vehicle crashes. There are other ways to get a TBI, but these are the most common. However, unintentional falls and motor vehicle crashes account for over half of TBI hospitalizations.

Types of Traumatic Brain Injuries

Concussions and brain contusions are some of the most common TBIs. This normally occurs when the head is hit with tremendous force or is violently shaken. The brain then bounces around the skull, causing concussions or bruising. Brain bleeds, swelling, and clots are other types of TBIs that can be deadly. Bleeding and blood clots can occur both inside the brain tissue and outside the brain between the brain and the skull. This can lead to a dangerous buildup of pressure or swelling of the brain. Diffuse axonal injuries or DAIs result from the brain sliding rapidly back and forth inside the skull. This causes widespread and irreparable damage to the brain’s nerve cells. Skull and Brain Penetration occur when a foreign object strikes a person’s skull with so much force that the skull fractures and the foreign object, or skull fragments pierce the brain.

While any kind of TBI can have lasting adverse effects on brain function, it’s important to remember some injuries may not be immediately evident. You might not know something is wrong till hours or even days later. It is imperative that victims seek early  medical attention. Even if there is no apparent evidence of trauma, a medical expert should be consulted to ensure there is no injury.

Can Traumatic Brain Injuries Worsen Over Time?

Any kind of TBI can leave the victim with permanent changes in cognitive or even emotional brain function. Many TBIs present immediate physical symptoms, others can worse or appear over time. This all depends on a number of factors. The type of trauma, the severity, prior healthy, and more need to be considered. Getting proper diagnosis and treatment for your injury is vital to your long-term recovery.
