Daylight Saving Time and Driver Fatigue

drowsy

Love it or hate it, daylight saving is inevitable, (of course, with the lucky exception of Arizona and Hawaii.) While most people dread having to set their clocks back or forward, we have continued the practice. However, losing or gaining an hour of sleep isn’t the only consequence of this time change. Unfortunately, this change affects our internal clock. Our body isn’t used to this sudden change in time. Turning the clock back an hour usually means leaving for work when its darker out. Sometimes, it’s completely pitch black when you start your commute.

Darker driving conditions mixed with losing an hour of sleep can lead to feeling drowsy. A dangerous feeling for those who are driving. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic, around 328,000 accidents are attributed to drowsy driving. But at the moment, we might not notice we’re feeling drowsy when driving. Here are some signs that you might be drowsy, according to the  National Sleep Foundation.

  • Difficulty focusing, frequent blinking, or heavy eyelids
  • Daydreaming; wandering/disconnected thoughts
  • Trouble remembering the last few miles driven; missing exits or traffic signs According
  • Yawning repeatedly or rubbing your eyes
  • Trouble keeping your head up
  • Drifting from your lane, tailgating, or hitting a shoulder rumble strip
  • Feeling restless and irritable

As you start to yawn and your head nods, you might think you’re fine. Unfortunately, as your vision starts to get blurry and your eyes get heavy, you are putting yourself and others on the road at risk. The best solution to this is to make sure you get a full night’s rest. Something especially important as more and more Americans report to getting less and less sleep.
