How To Protect Your Kids From Car Accidents

safety tips for children car accidents

According to KSAT 12, there were two people killed and two children injured in a San Antonio car accident in the 16400 block of Vance Jackson Rd. This is a sad and interesting situation, because the crash occurred around 5PM, so it’s not like the car drivers were cruising home drunk after going to the bar at one in the morning. This is when people are picking up their kids from soccer practice or heading home from work. The point is, there are somethings you can’t protect your kids from, and car accidents is usually one of them.

It’s essential to talk to your kids about car accidents and how to stay safe, but what about protecting your kids from problems on the road? Are there things you can do and precautions you can take in order to keep your children safe and out of the emergency room?

Let’s have a look at how you can do this.

Make Sure Everyone Wears Their Seatbelt

Talk to your children about the importance of wearing a seatbelt at all times while in the car and while at home. Even if you are walking across the street you should give them tips on how to stay safe while near roads. It doesn’t always have to be a lecture, but if you make the conversations fun or even incentivize a little bit (we will talk about that below) you can make your child feel comfortable and safe while sitting in a car or while near roads in general.

If Your Kids Are Young, Get the Right Car Seat

Getting the right car seat is important for all new parents or people who just have younger kids in general. A car seat that doesn’t fit is never going to help protect your kid, so what’s the point of even getting one? Do your research and talk to experts about what car seat is right for your kid.

Give Incentives To Following the Rules and Putting on Seat Belts

It’s easier said than done to convince your kids to put on their seatbelts and keep them on throughout the ride. This is where incentives come in. I understand that some people don’t want to spoil their kids, but this is an area that deserves spoiling. If your child consistently puts on their seatbelt without asking it will protect them far into the future.
