J&J to Pay $8B to Man After He Developed Breasts

johnson & johnson

This week, a Philadelphia jury has awarded $8 billion to a man who developed breasts after using a drug made by Johnson & Johnson. As a child, the man was prescribed the anti-psychotic, Risperdal.  They found that J&J failed to warn the now 26-year-old, Nicholas Murray, of the side effects of their drug. Mr. Murray was first given the drug when he was 9 years old.  According to the suit, he was developing symptoms related to autism spectrum disorder. He was prescribed the drug, even though the drug was only approved to treat schizophrenia and bipolar mania.

According to the lawsuit, Johnson & Johnson are accused of marketing the drug for unapproved or off-label use in children in order to drive profits. Of course, the pharmaceutical giant denied these allegations. They are confident that the ruling will be overturned. In a statement, they claim they were precluded from presenting “key evidence.”

Sadly, this isn’t the only case of someone claiming J&J didn’t warn them about the side effects of the drug. There are thousands of other lawsuits pending right now, regarding the same drug. This is on top of other lawsuits the company is facing over their part in the opioid crisis and for putting asbestos in talc powder, causing many to develop cancer.
