NCAA To Pay $75 Million In Concussion Settlement

NCAA

Yesterday (8/12/2019), an Illinois federal court approved a $75 million settlement over concussions in student-athletes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) was sued over their practiced regarding students who suffered concussions while playing sports regulated by the organization. This Monday (8/12/2019) a federal judge finally approved the settlement.  The money will go into a medical monitoring fund. Self-reported symptoms and medically evaluated ones will be paid for over a 50 year period. However, class members can choose to bring individual claims forward if funds run out before then. The deal will also require the NCAA to change some policies. Concussion management and return to play policies will have to reflect the organization’s commitment to stop or reduce concussions.

The catch is that not every student in the class will be able to claim the benefits of this settlement. Whether someone would be able to benefit would depend on a number of factors, including whether the state they live in recognizes medical monitoring claims.
