Texas is #1 in the Nation for Crane Deaths

personal injury

In July 2019, devastating destruction occurred when a construction crane was knocked over with a strong gust of wind. The accident left one man dead and dozens of others homeless after the crane crashed into an apartment building. In the wake of this, others are wondering what Texas is doing to stop these accidents from happening. Texas leads the nation in the number of deaths resulting from construction crane accidents. One would think the state would do something to prevent these deaths from happening. However, it turns out that most cities in Texas have no idea how many cranes are being used at a time or where they are. Something not very comforting to those who have suffered because of construction site accidents.

Who is responsible?

As it turns out, Texas does not have any department that regulates cranes. This job is up to the federal government. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) handles all inspections. According to OSHA, they have only inspected 40 cranes within the New Mexico, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas area. To put that in perspective, there are 21 tower cranes in Dallas alone according to NBCDFW. This does not include smaller cranes. This is disturbing news. Especially since OSHA usually only investigates a site if there has been a complaint or an accident.

Nothing is stopping Texas or Texas cities from passing more regulations. Cities like Chicago required inspectors to check cranes when they are installed, and other states require approval before cranes are installed. Texas does not have any of these requirements.
