CVS’s Negligence cost them $4.4M

CVS

The health giant, CVS has agreed to pay $4.35 million to resolve claims it released the information of 6,000 Ohio HIV victims. The company did this by sending windowed envelopes that showed the patient’s name, and referencing their HIV diagnoses. The settlement went through on Tuesday. While the company denies any wrongdoing, they agreed to pay out millions of dollars, and take steps to enhance security.  This is a major win for patient privacy.

Under this settlement, those affected will receive at least $400. The better news is that they won’t even have to submit a claim. However, some people affected could be awarded up to $10,000 more. If they can show financial harm because of the break, they could be compensated. If someone had not suffered any financial harm, they can be awarded up to an additional $2,500 for emotional distress.

To prevent this from happening again, CVS agreed to take HIV out of its labeling and train employees in privacy training.
