Med School says Vaping Lowers Immune Response

According to the Baylor College of Medicine, vaping can damage lungs and your immune response to pathogens. This four-month study, funded by the National Institute of Health, did not show the harms of nicotine. The study concludes that the cause of lung cell malfunction is due to the e-liquid solvents. These are the two main ingredients in e-liquid. Propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG.) While these two substances are FDA-approved for ingestion, they aren’t approved for inhalation. The other ingredients that flavor the e-liquids have not been tested. The effects of these flavoring ingredients when inhaled are still unknown.

The study pointed out the differences and similarities between vaping and traditional smoking.  For example, vaping doesn’t damage the lungs the same way cigarettes do. Cigarettes cause emphysema and inflammation soon after regular use. Vaping instead, alters the function of healthy lung cells. This creates an entirely new lung impairment. This is mostly due to an increase in lipids (fat cells) in the lungs. The increase in lipids makes fighting infection much harder. This could make fighting something like the flu, much harder for your body.

The study only used one kind of e-juice in their study. It was unflavored and had no nicotine. The base of this liquid was 60% PG and 40% VG. This study is very interesting, considering companies like JUUL claims their products are safer than smoking. This brings into question, what exactly is “better?” The FDA does not regulate the claims e-cigarette companies make about their products. They also have no control over the manufacturing of these products or the liquids. Until the FDA takes control of this situation, there will be many unknown factors when it comes to each different vaping product.
