Recently, heartburn medication has been in the news for being contaminated with a known carcinogen. Now, three new lots of antacids are being added to that list. All of these products were recalled for the same compound that started the Zantac recall last year. The impurity is known as N-Nitrosodimethylamine (commonly referred to as NDMA) and was recently found in both Denton and Appco Pharma ranitidine tablets. Both 150 mg and 300mg tablets have been recalled. If you have any of the reported tablets, you should discard the medication safely, or return it to the store. You can learn more about the recalls, here.
So far, there have been no reports of adverse effects on any of the brands affected by the recall. NDMA has been linked to increased risk for uterine and colorectal cancer. For patients who were prescribed or take Ranitidine tablets regularly should contact their doctor or pharmacist to see about alternative treatments prior to returning their medication. Always be sure to consult with a medical expert before making a change concerning your medication.
