Over the past 10 years, the Food and Drug Administration has received 127 cases of people suffering from seizures after vaping. Most of the victims have been teens and young adults. The FDA warns that it is unclear whether e-cigarettes have been the cause of the seizures. The FDA started its investigation back in April and encourages anyone who has suffered from seizures after vaping to report it as soon as possible. The acting FDA Commissioner, Ned Sharpless said “We appreciate the public response to our initial call for reports, and we strongly encourage the public to submit new or follow-up reports with as much detail as possible,” in a statement.
The Cause
The believed cause of these seizures is the high concentration of nicotine that can be found in e-cigarette liquids. If this highly concentrated “juice” is swallowed, it can be poisonous. It has been known to cause nausea, dizziness, tremors, and sweating depending on the amount ingested. In higher amounts, nicotine poisoning can lead to seizures or even death. Making the recent outbreak of teen vaping all the more terrifying for parents.
