The South Korean carmaker, Hyundai and its affiliate, Kia said they are using $758 million to settle a class-action suit. The suit is over an alleged problem with car engines that cause them to burst into flames. This deal will cover a total of 4.17 million cars made by the two companies. If you have a Kia or Hyundai with Theta II gasoline direct injection engines, your car may be affected. The money to settle the suit will be used to give customers cash compensation, lifetime warranties, and repair costs. The company said in a statement that they plan on installing new software in the cars to monitor the engines. If needed, Hyundai will also cover the costs of rental cars and past repairs.
The chief legal officer for Hyundai said “Reflecting our commitment to customer satisfaction, Hyundai is pleased to resolve this class action litigation. This settlement acknowledges our sincere willingness to take care of customers impacted by issues with this engine’s performance and recognizes the many actions we are already taking to assist our customers.” If you have one of the cars affected, you should contact your dealership as soon as possible. They will be able to walk you through the needed steps to ensure your car is safe to drive.
