Two of the biggest automakers in the world have issued a recall for millions of cars in the U.S. Toyota and Honda have said they are recalling over 5.3 million vehicles for safety issues in the United States. The two recalls from the Japanese manufactures are unrelated but both claim these issues are serious safety concerns. Toyota said Tuesday that 3.4 million vehicles worldwide are being recalled due to potential defective equipment used during accidents. Honda announced the 2.7 million cars worldwide are being recalled due to dysfunctional Takata airbag inflators.
Toyota’s recall is concerning defective electronic control units (ECU.) These devices are meant to help protect passengers during a crash. This particular ECU is meant to communicate with sensors to trigger airbag deployment. According to the company, they learned that some noises might interfere with the device’s connectivity. This interference might cause only some of the airbags to deploy on impact, or none at all. Toyota owners should be notified if they have a vehicle effect by the recall in mid-march.
Honda, on the other hand, has a problem many manufacturers are still dealing with. The Takata recall has been one of the biggest safety recalls in U.S history. These airbags are extremely dangerous and may suddenly explode, under-inflate, or even throw shrapnel at passengers. These airbags have already lead to 29 deaths. Honda is asking vehicle owners to get their vehicles inspected as soon as possible. Below is a list of the recalled vehicles. You can also click here to see if your car has any open recalls.
