Bayer, the German chemical company that bought the weed killer Roundup from Monsanto, is in the news again. Bayer first made headlines after several lawsuits in California. The product, Roundup was linked to cancer and sparked several lawsuits around the country. Over three major lawsuits in California resulted in Bayer paying the victims an average of 50 million each in damages. Realizing that there is little they can do to fight against these suits, they decided to come up with a settlement of $8 billion.
The 8 billion would settle more than 18,000 cases in the U.S. However, lawyers representing the class want a minimum of 10 billion to consider dropping the suit. The main issue for the $2 billion difference is that Bayer needs to have money set aside for victims not showing symptoms yet.
Rounding Up The Winnings
Most say that if Byer can get a settlement below $10 billion, it would be a major win for them. If Bayer loses any more cases, especially the cases being pursued in St. Louis, they could end up paying a lot more. Some people predict that the settlement demand could go up to $20 billion if more cases are won.
