Summer Safety Tips

Kids are getting out of school, families are going on vacation, and with more people getting vaccinated, we are expected to have a great summer! This is a long-awaited relief after months of being stuck in lock-down, quarantining.  While camping, barbecues, and road trips sound like fun, we shouldn’t forget to stay safe. With summer comes an uptick in emergency room visits. heat exhaustion and drowning are just some of the accidents that are specific to the summer season. To help prevent some of these accidents and injuries, we have made a list of some summer safety tips.

Water Safety

One of the best ways to beat the heat, and to stay cool is swimming. In Texas especially, the sun can be harsh. Hanging out poolside or a day out on the river is how thousands of Texas families choose to beat the heat. However, it’s important to remember that not everyone knows how to swim. Children especially, who might not have a lot of experience, can easily get overwhelmed in the water. To get the most out of your summer swim days, follow these tips:

•Enroll Children in Swimming lessons. Always make sure they continue improving their swimming skills!

•Parents and caregivers should always watch children closely near bodies of water. Even they’re wearing safety equipment like life jackets.

•Never let young children swim without adult supervision. Even if you think they’re good swimmers.

•Avoid distractions when supervising children who are swimming. Reading or texting could take away your attention, and distract you from possible danger.


Beat the Heat!

According to the Centers for Disease Control, getting serious sunburns can significantly;y increase a child’s risk of skin cancer as they get older. That’s why it’s always important for both children and adults to be protected from UV rays! Here are some ways to practice caution when out in the summer heat.

•Wear a protective hat whenever possible. Something that can provide some shade, and protect your face, head, ears, and neck can save you from a serious sunburn.

•Try to cover your body whenever possible to protect yourself from ultraviolet rays.

•Wear sunglasses. Protecting your eyes can help prevent cataracts later in life.

•Always apply a minimum of 15 SPF sunscreen when appropriate. Especially for children when they go outside!

•Dress infants and children appropriately for the weather. When it’s hot, use light-colored, loose-fitting clothes.

•If someone is displaying symptoms of heat-related illness seek medical attention right away.
