Distracted driving has become a massive issue across the country. It often comes in the form of texting while driving, which some local governments have made illegal. However, the ubiquity of the texting and driving problem has lead to some misinformation as to what exactly constitutes “distracted driving.”
What is Distracted Driving?
To put it simply, distracted driving is anything that takes your mind off of driving. You don’t need to take your eyes off the road to be distracted. Traditional texting not only takes your eyes off the road, but it also takes your hands off the wheel and your focus away from driving. Most people think that voice texting is an obvious solution to this problem. Being able to speak instead of type would make texting safer while driving, right? Unfortunately, the research doesn’t support this.
Is Voice Texting a Safe Alternative?
The Texas A&M Transportation Institute conducted a study to see if voice texting is actually safer. As it turns out, it’s not any better than manual texting. Drivers in the study had significantly delayed response times, they weren’t consistently looking at the road, and voice to text actually takes more of the drivers time than manually texting. Drivers think they are being safer, but when they are lulled into a false sense of security, it’s dangerous for everyone on the road. This could lead to an increased likelihood of accidents. If you’re behind the wheel, its best just to ignore your texts until you’re safely at your destination. The Do Not Disturb While Driving feature available on most smartphones is a great tool to help with this.
