Why Does the U.S Have High Car Crash Rates?

car crash

According to the CDC, there are around six million car crashes in the United States every year.  That is around 16,430 crashes per day.  Because of these crashes, nearly 40,000 Americans die each year. These are frightening statistics, but are these numbers to be expected? Do other countries face similar statistics? As it turns out, they do not. The United States has some of the highest traffic-related deaths in the world.

According to a study done by the World Health Organization, the U.S has a traffic fatality rate of 12.4 deaths per 100,000. 12 might sound like a low number, but that is 50% higher than similar nations. Western Europe, Canada, and Australia have much lower fatality rates. These countries average around 5 deaths per 100,000. So, why does the U.S have so many more traffic deaths?

Why The U.S Has Highers Traffic Deaths

One major factor is that Americans simply drive more. The U.S is a large country. Most cities and towns are designed to accommodate cars and are not pedestrian-friendly. Because of this, More people need to have their own motor vehicle to get around. This is opposed to other countries that are much more pedestrian-friendly. In other countries, you’ll have a much easier time getting around by simply walking or taking public transportation. Many people in other countries don’t even own a car if they live in the city. They don’t need one because of how their cities are designed.

Another factor is drunk driving laws. When compared to similar countries, the U.S has drunk driving laws that are far too lenient. The World Health Organization recommends enforcing drunk driving laws at a low .05% BAC instead of .08%. Studies have shown this paired with stricter penalties for drivers caught violating the law have a positive impact on driver safety.

Speeding also contributes significantly to the traffic fatalities the U.S sees. Other countries have strict limits on the speed drivers can drive. Many urban streets have a limit of 30 mph. In the U.S, local municipalities have a difficult time adjusting speed limits. In many states, local governments need the permission of the state in order to change the speed limit on roads. Because of this, it makes it difficult to penalize drivers who exceed the posted speed limit in dangerous areas.
