Opioid Makers Offer $50B Settlement

opioid

Over $22 billion in cash and $28 billion in services are being offered by 5 different drugmakers to settle a lawsuit that alleges their industry fueled the opioid crisis. So far, the drug industry is facing about 2,600 lawsuits, brought forward from a different state and local governments, hospitals, and other groups seeking to hold these companies responsible for the damage they have done. Governments are seeking at least enough funds to cover the cost of services in their communities.

The companies involved are Johnson and Johnson, McKesson, AmerisourceBergen, Cardinal Health, and Teva Pharmaceuticals. Johnson and Johnson are proposing to pay $4 billion in cash. Teva has offered to give away $28 in medication and services. The other drugmakers plan on paying $18 billion in cash over the next 18 years. It is important to note that these offers have not been accepted yet. The negotiations are being led by the attorney general for North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennesse, and Texas, according to sources close to the case.
